What do you guys think of Asheville? My partner and I are considering moving there, as opposed to San Francisco. Looking to make pagan queer friends, here and there. Namaste`, T.Jaye

I can't speak for experience actually living there, but it's been my observation that any city, town or place that attracts that many artists and craftspeople has GOT to be good on a number of levels. And I would imagine that includes more open acceptance of beliefs like paganism.

I love Asheville. I have always wanted to move there. It has the best qualities of severial places I admire the most: Boulder, Santa Fe, and San Francisco. Unfortunately I can not easily transfer what I do now for a living to be able to afford to live there.

Please go check it out. You WILL fall in love with Asheville. I promise.

      Peace,
      Lucian :-)

I'm in Asheville! I love it here (lived here 3 years now, originally from Connecticut).

There are lots of good things to say for Asheville. The nature and mountains are phenomenally beautiful, we get four distinct seasons, but a tolerably short and somewhat mild winter, and a warm but not-too-hot, long summer. There are drum circles with huge crowds every Friday, and lots of great local and touring music. Cost of living is pleasantly reasonable. People are friendly and interesting.

There are tons of hippies in Asheville.

There are definitely plenty of queers.

The main bad ... tragically, at least in the downtown nightlife, there are very, very, very, very, very few queer hippies or bohemians/alternative people of any sort among the gay conformists. Unfortunately, the gay boys have some sort of reaction (my theory) to the Southern prejudices that do somewhat leak into this otherwise extremely liberal city. Somehow they think that if they ALL wear Abercrombie things will be better. I disagree.

    Peace and Love,
    Ryvr

Ryvr isn't that the whole of the gay community? I think the gay hippie or the non materialistic gay man is very few and far between.

Well, yeah, that seems to be what observation suggests, and though I often target Asheville gays for this particular criticism, it seems to be most everywhere. I did find gay people in Connecticut often to be more diverse and open-minded though.

It's mind-bogglingly backwards seeming to me. I think that being gay has made me more likely to question everything and find my own path. I can't really get why other gay people seem drawn to a homogeneous herd mentality.

Oh well, glad to have the company of you all here at Tribe!

        Peace and Love,
        Ryvr

the first time i went to Asheville, i was amazingly surprised & found to really like it there
it's probably the only city in the eastern half of the u.s. i'd really think to move to
i drove from Tennessee along a mountain pass - deep in the hills and woods along a gravel road
          coming out to hot springs
from there i headed into Asheville
          it seemed an appropriate approach
          and made sense
there is such beautiful countryside and natural places to explore near ashville
it soooo reminded me or Oregon
the city itself has an excellent human scale with tons of outdoor cafe's
          and very cool people
          the restaurants are delicious!
it seems to have a good art/gallery scene as well
I've been to several of the gay bars & haven't found my niche among my alterna-queers yet, but I'd like to
