[This is a major victory! Thankfully, public pressure has made the California Supreme Court take the right stand. This decision that "domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage" is to the left of Obama and Clinton, both of whom oppose Gay/Lesbian marriage. -Steven Argue]
California Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 1:05 p.m. ET

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry.

The justices released the 4-3 decision Thursday, saying that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George.

The cases were brought by the city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and another gay rights group in March 2004 after the court halted San Francisco's month-long same-sex wedding march that took place at Mayor Gavin Newsom's direction.

Pomosexuality and the Death of the Label

BECAUSE LABELS ARE FOR CLOTHING... NOT PEOPLE.

Pomosexuality (short for postmodern sexuality) refers to a nonorientation in which people disregard sexual labels altogether. While it is convenient to sort everyone into a handful of different groups - homosexual, bisexual, heterosexual - pomosexuality argues that not only can these words and categories not do justice to the complexity of human sexuality, but are also grand illusions socially constructed to maintain a state of separateness between people. Like most other things in life, sexual orientation and/or gender identity isn't a black and white, either/or experience for many of us. More appropriately, it is best described as a fluid and incalculably unique journey that is beyond definition. Pomosexuality literally means anything you want it to mean. It means anything goes. And it represents an end to all the confusion, oppression, fear, and restraint that comes with trying to identify with a restrictive label.
Join the new social network that is introducing the concept of pomosexuality to the masses, revolutionizing the way the world views sexuality and gender. http://wWw.POMOWORLD.com

London based music project for gay/queer men

I'm a queer/gay man training as a music leader, looking to create a project for my peers, 40+ age group, addressing the need for grass-roots (as opposed to commercial/scene) music making, exploring group dynamics, 'community' and any other content agreed by the group that will aid creative music making. Vocalists and musicians of any level welcome, including those with no previous music education. No fees. This is intended as a pilot project to bring together men/musicians who would not usually have the chance to meet up and explore.

Many thanks,

Its amazing to find a group of queer hippies!!!

Im currently in Claremont, California going to a pretty small liberal arts college called Pitzer College. Pretty much everyone at this school is a hippie, wich makes things super interesting. . . especially with the degree of environmental friendliness and activism that I experience on a regular basis. . . Its pretty amazing to go to a school of like minded individuals, but finding a group of queer hippies has been a little tough to do; so to be tottaly honest I am very excited to be a part of this group!

Is anyone possibly here in the LA/SOCAL area? If so it would be great to go hiking with a group sometime!

A New Year's Resolution? Free Yoga Classes

Question: Ready for that "New Year's Resolution?"
Answer: ? (Didn't think so).

Well thanks to the "Grotto" at Sports Basement - you have a "free" chance to improve your well being ... ..

)n 01 December 2007, Sports Basement joined together with local yoga teachers to give a yoga gift to the community.
Next yoga class:

• Sunday, 30 December 2007 - 10:30 - 12:00 noon. -
• Yoga Flow - with Annie Leguennec
• http://www.sfgoju.com/

• Sports Basement --San Francisco
• 1590 Bryant St.
San Francisco, CA
(415) 575-3000
http://sportsbasement.com

And due to the very high turnout of yoga students, speed walkers, coach potatoes, Fat Tire Beer Specialist, snowboarders, and then some . . . Starting January 2008, Sports Basement will host free yoga classes each & every Sunday from 1:00 - 2:30pm.

Yoga Teachers of various styles (Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa, Raja Yoga, Kundalini, Anasara Yoga, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga, Anna Forrest Yoga, etc.) will present their unique connection with the yogic path.

Check back each month and see who’s in the mix – free yoga classes by yoga teachers of all walks of life. Official Website: http://ynottony.com/yoga1.htm

And, if you are a yoga teacher (or a soon to graduate yoga teacher) looking to share your knowledge, practice karma yoga (community service), and put yourself in the public eye, come join in & volunteer your services making yoga affordable for every individual. Pick one Sunday per month . . Teach as many months as you would enjoy doing. . . .

Yoga teachers will receive a $25.00 gift certificate from Sports Basement (per yoga class) & can use the platform as a way of promoting themselves and their unique yoga experience.

Regardless, it's a grand opportunity to start the year on the right path, meet some like minded individuals, see life in a different light, & calm the mind.

* Yoga teachers of all schools of yoga are invited to teach.
* Yoga students of all levels are invited to attend.

For more information or to get your name on the yoga teacher's list - contact: Iyengar Yoga Teacher, tony at:: http://ynottony.com/contact.php

1. Send a brief Yoga Bio
2. Send a list of your available Sundays in January, February & March - 2008.
3. Send a link to your website, personal profile (Myspace, Zaadz, Tribe, Yelp review, etc) or something which speaks highly of you
4. Start advertising your yoga class

Wishing the best of all possible worlds,
tony

Neo-hippies, pseudo-hippies, phishheads, jugband hippies, dreadlocked hippies, organic-farmer hippies, barefoot-around-town hippies, you name it ... all kinds of hippies! Except for one kind ... queer hippies! That we don't got, except for me, Burlington's lone gay hippie, surrounded by preppy gay shopoholics in pastel Gap shirts! Someone save me!!!!!!

Gay Geeks Saturday Night! (Oct 6)

60 folks now on the email list! Welcome newcomers!

It happened to me tonight: I went bar hopping this evening and came to the realization that when I go out on a Saturday night I don't meet the people I want to meet. And heck, this is Folsom Street Fair weekend. Too many people, for one, and too much noise to get into good conversations. And the cruise crush is on. Too much distraction! I wanted to turn in my gay card right then and there.

So, I decided to move the Gay Geeks gathering from Saturday afternoons to Saturday NIGHTS, offering you a TRUE ALTERNATIVE in socializing.

Okay, I'm now calling the Gay Geeks gathering, "Gay Geeks Saturday Night" (a play on an old big band tune, "Jukebox Saturday Night" if you must know).

Info for next gathering:

GAY GEEKS SATURDAY NIGHT
Saturday October 6, 8:00pm
Muddy's Coffeehouse (new venue!)
1304 Valencia Street at 24th, San Francisco

Parking: within 2 blocks typically Public Transit: 1 block from BART 24th Street station, also on Muni lines 26, 48, and 67, and 1 block from lines 14 and 49. Truly a public transit paradise.

Muddy's does not have a good selection of food, but the owner allows people to bring in food from elsewhere. There is a great Mexican restaurant around the corner, also a falafel place and a burger place (with Niman Ranch beef) nearby.

What's the theory behind the Gay Geeks Gathering? Gay Geeks is a haven for intellectuals and visionaries. Thus, your learned geekery is most welcome. If you study languages, streetcars, oceans, religion, have a collection of Harper's Magazine dating to 1909, you're running for mayor of SF, or you've just built a propane-fired Victorian house on wheels, you're our kind of people. Come on by.

The Gay Geeks Gathering is NOT about computers, and it doesn’t focus on gay issues. We don't meet in a "gay" venue, or in a "gay" neighborhood. We're about breaking away from ALL of that! The Gay Geeks Gathering breaks the mold!

TOPICS NEXT TIME: Encouraged but not limited to:

(1) How do we know if someone is crazy or not? Is George W Bush crazy? Are the people running for mayor of SF crazy? Is the guy who begs for money at the freeway offramp crazy?

(2) Will something replace conventional news gathering now that newspapers appear to be on the brink of collapse? Is a news wiki a better idea?

(3) Why do people continue to collect newspaper clippings when the Internet is available, or collect clothes when they're out of style or don't fit anymore? Is collecting stuff specifically an American disease? Or is it a disease at all?

--David Kaye, founder of the Original Gay Geeks Gathering (established January 1997)

Seeking queer triads for research!

My name is Sunny. I am a graduate student in the Sexuality Studies program at San Francisco State University. I am conducting research on polyamory. The aim of my study is to explore how individuals in queer polyamorous triads discuss love in their relationships. I am in search of individuals in queer, long-term (one year or longer), polyamorous triads to interview. Individuals must identify themselves and their relationships as queer, and the triads must be three people who are all sexually and romantically involved with one another.

Participating in this study will entail a 45-90 minute one-on-one interview at a comfortable and private location convenient for both of us to discuss your experiences and feelings of love while in a triad.

If you are currently in a queer, long-term (one year or longer), triad relationship and are interested in participating in the study, please contact me!

(415) 516-0908

I am currently seeking people to interview! Please contact me as soon as possible if you would like to participate.

Thank you!

Lost Coast Nature-Based Spiritual Queers

Hi Kinfolk,
Just a little "heads up" if you're in the Eureka/Arcata sphere (and other places-if you're up for the drive). A wonderful two-spirited woman is beginning to facilitate a group of nature-based spiritual queers and is extending an invitation to any and all who might be interested in discovering, exploring or deepening their relationship to pagan forms of spirituality, Native American, Buddhist or other Earth-centered traditions. It's only three weeks old, and meets (she hopes), perhaps every other Sunday from 6:30-8:00 at the Eureka Co-op. If you're interested or just plain curious, give her a call at (707) 269-7044.

Original SF Gay Geeks Gathering This Saturday

OKAY! This is IT! Our First Gathering of 2007!

I can't STAND it anymore! I've had one vapid conversation too many.

Announcing the next Original Gay Geeks Gathering:

Saturday, August 18, 2:00pm Mission Creek Cafe, back room 968 Valencia Street (betw 20th and 21st) San Francisco

I haven't cleared this with management (hell, I'd have to be there before 11am on a weekday!) but what the heck. They have good food (try the Chicken Salpicon sandwich!) and a good atmosphere. Heck, there are even books for sale in the back room. How much more nerdy can you get?

Gay Geeks is a haven for intellectuals and visionaries. Thus, your learned geekery is most welcome. If you study languages, streetcars, oceans, Islam, or have a collection of Elvis postcards, or you're running for mayor of SF, you're our kind of people. Come on by. This sets the Original Gay Geeks apart from other such groups. The group doesn’t focus on computers, and it doesn’t focus on gay issues. In fact, we’ve usually gone through hours of discussions and not mentioned computers or gay folks even once.

I envision that this gathering will meet the FIRST and THIRD Saturdays of the month at 2:00pm, but always read the email first to be sure where we're meeting.

To get onto the email list, send a blank email to: sfgaygeeks-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or visit the Yahoo group website at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfgaygeeks

Topics: Be most assured that the topics will be a whirlwind of everything imaginable.

Show & Tell: If you have something interesting to show, such as your bug collection or whatnot, consider bringing it to one of our future gatherings.

Lesbians sentenced for self-defense. FREE THEM NOW!

FREE THEM NOW!
Lesbians sentenced for self-defense
All-white jury convicts Black women

By Imani Henry
New York

Published Jun 21, 2007 2:58 AM
On June 14, four African-American women—Venice Brown (19), Terrain Dandridge (20), Patreese Johnson (20) and Renata Hill (24)—received sentences ranging from three-and-a-half to 11 years in prison. None of them had previous criminal records. Two of them are parents of small children.

Their crime? Defending themselves from a physical attack by a man who held them down and choked them, ripped hair from their scalps, spat on them, and threatened to sexually assault them—all because they are lesbians.

The mere fact that any victim of a bigoted attack would be arrested, jailed and then convicted for self-defense is an outrage. But the length of prison time given further demonstrates the highly political nature of this case and just how racist, misogynistic, anti-gay, anti-youth and anti-worker the so-called U.S. justice system truly is.

The description of the events, reported below, is based on written statements by a community organization (FIERCE) that has made a call to action to defend the four women, verbal accounts from court observers and evidence from a surveillance camera.

The attack

On Aug. 16, 2006, seven young, African-American, lesbian-identified friends were walking in the West Village. The Village is a historic center for lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) communities, and is seen as a safe haven for working-class LGBT youth, especially youth of color.

As they passed the Independent Film Cinema, 29-year-old Dwayne Buckle, an African-American vendor selling DVDs, sexually propositioned one of the women. They rebuffed his advances and kept walking.

“I’ll f— you straight, sweetheart!” Buckle shouted. A video camera from a nearby store shows the women walking away. He followed them, all the while hurling anti-lesbian slurs, grabbing his genitals and making explicitly obscene remarks. The women finally stopped and confronted him. A heated argument ensued. Buckle spat in the face of one of the women and threw his lit cigarette at them, escalating the verbal attack into a physical one.

Buckle is seen on the video grabbing and pulling out large patches of hair from one of the young women. When Buckle ended up on top of one of the women, choking her, Johnson pulled a small steak knife out of her purse. She aimed for his arm to stop him from killing her friend.

The video captures two men finally running over to help the women and beating Buckle. At some point he was stabbed in the abdomen. The women were already walking away across the street by the time the police arrived.

Buckle was hospitalized for five days after surgery for a lacerated liver and stomach. When asked at the hospital, he responded at least twice that men had attacked him.

There was no evidence that Johnson’s kitchen knife was the weapon that penetrated his abdomen, nor was there any blood visible on it. In fact, there was never any forensics testing done on her knife. On the night they were arrested, the police told the women that there would be a search by the New York Police Department for the two men—which to date has not happened.

After almost a year of trial, four of the seven were convicted in April. Johnson was sentenced to 11 years on June 14.

Even with Buckle’s admission and the video footage proving that he instigated this anti-gay attack, the women were relentlessly demonized in the press, had trumped-up felony charges levied against them, and were subsequently given long sentences in order to send a clear resounding message—that self-defense is a crime and no one should dare to fight back.

Political backdrop of the case

Why were these young women used as an example? At stake are the billions of dollars in tourism and real estate development involved in the continued gentrification of the West Village. This particular incident happened near the Washington Square area—home of New York University, one of most expensive private colleges in the country and one of the biggest employers and landlords in New York City. The New York Times reported that Justice Edward J. McLaughlin used his sentencing speech to comment on “how New York welcomes tourists.” (June 17)

The Village is also the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, the three-day street battle against the NYPD that, along with the Compton Cafeteria “Riots” in California, helped launch the modern-day LGBT liberation movement in 1969. The Manhattan LGBT Pride march, one of the biggest demonstrations of LGBT peoples in the world, ends near the Christopher Street Piers in the Village, which have been the historical “hangout” and home for working-class trans and LGBT youth in New York City for decades.

Because of growing gentrification in recent years, young people of color, homeless and transgender communities, LGBT and straight, have faced curfews and brutality by police sanctioned by the West Village community board and politicians. On Oct. 31, 2006, police officers from the NYPD’s 6th Precinct indiscriminately beat and arrested several people of color in sweeps on Christopher Street after the Halloween parade.

Since the 1980s there has been a steady increase in anti-LGBT violence in the area, with bashers going there with that purpose in mind.

For trans people and LGBT youth of color, who statistically experience higher amounts of bigoted violence, the impact of the gentrification has been severe. As their once-safe haven is encroached on by real estate developers, the new white and majority heterosexual residents of the West Village then call in the state to brutalize them.

For the last six years the political LGBT youth group FIERCE has been at the forefront of mobilizing young people “to counter the displacement and criminalization of LGBTSTQ [lesbian, gay, bi, two spirit, trans, and queer] youth of color and homeless youth at the Christopher Street Pier and in Manhattan’s West Village.” (www.fiercenyc.org) FIERCE has also been the lead organization supporting the Jersey Seven and their families.

The trial and the media

Deemed a so-called “hate crime” against a straight man, every possible racist, anti-woman, anti-LGBT and anti-youth tactic was used by the entire state apparatus and media. Everything from the fact that they lived outside of New York, in the working-class majority Black city of Newark, N.J., to their gender expressions and body structures were twisted and dehumanized in the public eye and to the jury.

According to court observers, McLaughlin stated throughout the trial that he had no sympathy for these women. The jury, although they were all women, were all white. All witnesses for the district attorney were white men, except for one Black male who had several felony charges.

Court observers report that the defense attorneys had to put enormous effort into simply convincing the jury that they were “average women” who had planned to just hang out together that night. Some jurists asked why they were in the Village if they were from New Jersey. The DA brought up whether they could afford to hang out there—raising the issue of who has the right to be there in the first place.

The Daily News reporting was relentless in its racist anti-lesbian misogyny, portraying Buckle as a “filmmaker” and “sound engineer” preyed upon by a “lesbian wolf pack” (April 19) and a “gang of angry lesbians.” (April 13)

Everyone has been socialized by cultural archetypes of what it means to be a “man” or “masculine” and “woman” or “feminine.” Gender identity/expression is the way each indivdual chooses or not to express gender in their everyday lives, including how they dress, walk, talk, etc. Transgender people and other gender non-conforming people face oppression based on their gender expression/identity.

The only pictures shown in the Daily News were of the more masculine-appearing women. One of the most despiciable headlines in the Daily News, “‘I’m a man!’ lesbian growled during fight,” (April 13) was targeted against Renata Hill, who was taunted by Buckle because of her masculinity.

Ironically, Johnson, who was singled out by the judge as the “ringleader,” is the more feminine of the four. According to the New York Times, in his sentencing remarks, “Justice McLaughlin scoffed at the assertion made by ... Johnson, that she carried a knife because she was just 4-foot-11 and 95 pounds, worked nights and lived in a dangerous neighborhood.” He quoted the nursery rhyme, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” (June 15)

All of the seven women knew and went to school with Sakia Gunn, a 19-year-old butch lesbian who was stabbed to death in Newark, N.J., in May 2003. Paralleling the present case, Gunn was out with three of her friends when a man made sexual advances to one of the women. When she replied that she was a lesbian and not interested, he attacked them. Gunn fought back and was stabbed to death.

“You can’t help but wonder that if Sakia Gunn had a weapon, would she be in jail right now?” Bran Fenner, a founding member and co-executive director of FIERCE, told Workers World. “If we don’t have the right to self-defense, how are we supposed to survive?”

National call to action

While racist killer cops continue to go without indictment and anti-immigrant paramilitary groups like the Minutemen are on the rise in the U.S., The Jersey Four sit behind bars for simply defending themselves against a bigot who attacked them in the Village.

Capitalism at its very core is a racist, sexist, anti-LGBT system, sanctioning state violence through cops, courts and its so-called laws. The case of the Jersey Four gives more legal precedence for bigoted violence to go unchallenged. The ruling class saw this case as a political one; FIERCE and other groups believe the entire progressive movement should as well.

Fenner said, “We are organizing in the hope that this wakes up all oppressed people and sparks a huge, broad campaign to demand freedom for the Jersey Four.”

FIERCE is asking for assistance for these young women, including pro-bono legal support, media contacts and writers, pen pals, financial support, and diverse organizational support. For details, visit www.fiercenyc.org.

questioning portions of "New Age" thought in our communities

Hey fellow human beings, i am seeking others' thoughts on this so any input you'd care to share is very welcome!

i've been listening to various dissent from a seeming label ("New Agers") given to we hippie-folk-types, and wanted to share some of my thoughts, and seek others' input.

Some background
i've been getting into discussions in other places about some of the challenges and problems with the label (?) of "New Age" given to so much of "what hippies are" and what we're about and such, and thought i'd offer a thinking-through here in the midst of one of our hives, so to speak. Heh heh.

So one thing i've been thinking about this "New Age" thing, which actually "gets my goat", is that there is so much attention and single-minded focus given to the idea of *detachment* (i.e. from "ego") without a seeming awareness about *when* such things were/are likely valuable.

To give an example of when such can be valuable, i thought of the war movie "The Thin Blue (?) Line" in the scene where the "americans" were rushing into an 'enemy' camp and one guy (an 'enemy'), there in the chaos of it all, was sitting in a Buddhist-type pose!

my line of thought
So here's my line of thought on this, and i'm wondering if others think this is in the right tune of things. So i'm thinking that this Buddha dude came along into the world with his visions in the context of his original people being over-run and under conquering attack by much-too-heavy invaders from elsewhere. And Buddha's vision-way *greatly aided* people in pain, and thus he was seen as a kind of saint. And his methods made sense for use in heavy situations of all kinds.

On the other hand, in the context in which we find ourselves, we "americans", we (settlers and indigneous peoples) are not over-run completely, and we can *still* make a difference, so we need not always orient ourselves to this way of passivity. You see what i'm saying?

But those who influence so much of our movements, have experience and reason not to feel this, and they seem to accept defeat (and assimilation), when they can't run, without *crucially challenging* in every POSSIBLE way. (Indeed, even their otherwise deep consciousness--in a certain area of 'enlightenment'--reveals that they, like anyone, have blindspots. And so they pursue ideas like *detachment* and their focus and their influence comes to somewhat dominate other ways of possibly seeing --and those deemed non-elders ---or "capable" of seeing deeply--- those with seemingly "not useful" gifts to add-to the banquet of joy in this world, are to basically go along with the program.

Because for one, "the elders of the hippie movement" (at least in my limited experience) have had planted in their heads similar pollutions or strategically-challenged alienations like everyone else; and are thus *products* like the rest of us, of colonization.

Am i digressing?

So, stuck in such a tradition, we end up not even *trying out* resurgence in ways that we're not "used to." (See the broader ramifications of this blindspot, anyone else?)

a curious thing
So i see this curious thing; and i see it amongst settlers who also are learning the ways of the indigenous directly. It's like there's no awareness of ourselves as *part and parcel* of this alternative system; we're, like, just following something like orders. We're so "in the flow" that we don't seem to *give ourselves permission* in even **this area** of our lives!

Now, at the risk of going perhaps off-topic "too far"(?), i just wanna say that this is how we settlers (and perhaps as well, growing numbers of indigenous people) are being hoodwinked by this entirely "normalized" state of affairs...because in this scenario, *all these people* are not allowed (in their minds, anyway) to complement or add-to what is being shared. And in the old days --i really feel this-- the old ways *ABSOLUTELY NEEDED* EVERYONE's heart-felt input! (But the re-writing of history has come along and polluted our ability to see this reality) Without such input from all (and without being able to see such value), they were rendered much weaker (why do you *think* that the invaders liked talking only to chiefs, whether an indigenous group had one or not!).

"It's not the right time, yet."
And then there's the subordination-oriented value/belief of just when "the right time" never is. And when i speaque up, in my own spiritual way, un-aligned with *any* noted/reputable interest group (and yes, of the *informal* kind!), i'm automatically deemed DISRESPECTFUL or "rattling beyond my parameters" and "preventing others' tranquility, prayers, quiet"!

And seeing the context i've brough here, isn't that way of seeing a curious thing?

Ancient traditional ways, not yet fully polluted by colonization, saw that all can *intuitively* see that "speaking up" (in myriad ways, including the "crazy") was where the strength of survival was; the strength of thriving! And quite likely, the strength of the excellence of having this human experience! Intelligence was in full gear in myriad ways. People prioritized thinking things through in ways whose reflections brought them the kind of great spirit they wanted in life. It wasn't perfect (whatever that is!), and it made for a way of life which many many refugees from europe sought to integrate with!

Well, once again my ancestors with the Long Wind have spoken through me, heh heh!

Anyone wanna get into this more? (or maybe i've confused ya, and maybe i can un-confuse ya?)

Hunky Jesus Contest April 8

Just a reminder that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence anniversary party is coming up next Sunday, April 8 (Easter) at Mission Dolores Park in San Francisco. Among the events is the Hunky Jesus contest where you can win a valuable prize if the judges believe you can fulfill the image of Jesus for the coming year. Last year pogosticking Jesus Roky Roulette won (he was carrying a cross and pogosticking onstage). One year the winner didn't even have long or even longish hair.

In the interests of having a hunky Jesus who at least looks the part, long hair and all, I'm reminding everybody to tell their friends about the contest and the anniversary party this coming Sunday.

Burning Man hosts The Green Man this year

For all that there is ample ribbing of the 'hippy' stereotype among BurningMan folks (but its mostly just on the boards...the actual event participants are way cool) this year the theme of The Green Man is reaching new heights in trying to raise the awareness of Burners of what effect their actions have on the earth and the environment. Green energy and renewable resources are being showcased, and for any fellow queer hippies here interested in radical self reliance with a heavy Earth-friendly theme, this is the year to check out Black Rock City at www.burningman.com at least, if not making plans to go do the event. Been there 4 times, planning my 5th for this fall, its an experience like no other. Anybody else here been? What did you think?

The Long Shadow of Race

Interesting article from Portside.

The Long Shadow of Race
by Michael D. Yates

Monthly Review March 2007

http://www.monthlyreview.org/0307yates.htm

[This is an excerpt from Associate Editor Michael D.
Yates' new book, Cheap Motels and a Hotplate: An
Economist's Travelogue, available from Monthly Review
Press. Readers should ask their local bookshop for the
book or order it directly by phoning 1-800-670-9499 or
1-212-691-2555.]

I have always lived in the long shadow of race.
Johnstown, Pittsburgh, Portland, Miami Beach, in every
city racist remarks and racist actions were
commonplace. You didn't have to look for them; they
were hard to escape. And on our road trips, no matter
where we went or for how few days, it was not at all
unusual for a white person to offer a racist comment.
It is almost as if there is an understanding among
whites that they are all fellow conspirators in the
race war.

In Johnstown, daily racism--in bars, at the college
where I taught, even in union halls--was a fact of life.
A colleague complained in the faculty dining room that
he didn't know why his daughter had to pay for work
done at the university's dental school clinic when all
those "niggers" got it for free. In the college gym,
students told me they cheered for the Boston Celtics
because they were the "white team." A man in a bowling
alley threatened to assault me because I said that
Michael Jordan was a great basketball player. In a
union class, I got a complaint on the student
evaluation forms: too many blacks in the class. There
was one.

Black people call the Steel City "Pittsburgh South." In
our first home there, in an apartment building complex,
the college kids got drunk on weekends and hurled
racial epithets at passersby from their balconies. When
we moved to another part of town, an old neighborhood
woman warned us to keep our curtains closed. She said
that black people looked in windows trying to spot
something to steal.

I have already commented on the racism of Portland. In
Miami Beach, during our six-week stay in 2002, while we
were talking to the Cuban-American manager of a realty
office, she began to berate the city's Haitian
immigrants as dirty criminals. She automatically
assumed that I would have no sympathy for these
wretched souls who, desperately poor to start with,
have been denied asylum, put in detention centers,
forced to take the worst jobs, and subjected to vicious
racial discrimination.

I got a haircut in a small shop in a mall along Santa
Fe's Cerillos Road. I struck up a conversation with the
white woman cutting my hair. She was a single mother
with a teenage son, and beginning to plan for his
college education. Out of the blue she said she was
angry that the local schools were biased in favor of
Hispanics and Indians. They got all the breaks. This
astounded me. We had been reading about--and seen--the
dismal conditions faced by the city's people of color.
They were poor; they lived in substandard housing; they
did the worst jobs; their neighborhoods were ravaged by
drugs and alcohol. Many went hungry. The whole history
of New Mexico and its capital city was awash in racism
and violence against nonwhites. Yet here was a woman
who had no hesitance to tell a stranger that the
oppressors were really the victims.

In Flagstaff, Arizona, we went to a party organized by
a progressive organization called the Friends of
Flagstaff. Over its potluck dinner, we met a woman from
Boston. She decried the lack of diversity in Flagstaff,
saying without irony that she wished it was more like
Boston, with its many ethnic restaurants. What was
remarkable was her seeming unawareness that Flagstaff
is a diverse city, with large Hispanic and Indian
populations--Indians comprise nearly 20 percent of all
residents. They must be invisible to her.

Again in Flagstaff, we were enjoying the exhibits in
the Museum of Northern Arizona. We ended our visit with
a stop at the museum's bookstore. We were admiring the
Indian-made works of art for sale when an Indian artist
came in and showed the manager some of his jewelry and
asked if the museum was interested in buying his
pieces. Apparently the craftsmanship was good, but the
Indian had been drinking and was known to the manager.
The manager and his assistant treated this man as if he
were a pathetic drunk unworthy of their time. He kept
lowering his price, giving up whatever pride he had to
these white people with money. A few minutes later, he
was dismissed. After he left, the two museum staffers
mocked him. The assistant, not realizing her ignorance,
said that perhaps it was time for the Indian to join
AAA. We left the museum with heavy hearts. It was as if
the history of white oppression of Indians had been
reenacted in microcosm before our eyes.

In Estes Park, people smugly said about a group of
shabby riverside shacks not far from our cabin, "Oh,
that's where the Mexicans live." The local peace group
didn't bother to solicit support from local Mexicans
because "They probably wouldn't be interested. They
have to work too hard and wouldn't have time." We were
talking to a jewelry store owner who, after remarking
on how much safer (often a code word for "whiter")
Estes Park was than his former home in Memphis,
Tennessee, said that the Estes Park crime report was
pretty small and those arrested always had names you
couldn't pronounce. (Those damned Mexicans again.) In
the laundromat we met a woman from the Bayview section
of Brooklyn, and she said that she had moved here
because you couldn't recognize her Brooklyn
neighborhood anymore. She told us, without I think
realizing how racist she sounded, that there were so
many Arabs there now that locals call it "Bay Root."
"Get it?," she said, "Bay Root."

There are numerous inconvenient facts that racists are
unwilling to confront. The following data compare
mainly blacks and whites. This is because these are the
most readily available and the ones I know best.
Comparisons between whites and other minorities such as
Hispanics or Indians would show the same trends.

More than one million black men and women are in our
jails and prisons, about the same number as whites,
though the black share of the population is less than
one-sixth that of whites. It is more likely that a
black person of college age is in prison than in
college. There are no economic indicators showing a
black (or Hispanic or American Indian) advantage. Black
median income, whether for families or individuals, is
less than for whites, as is wealth. Black wages are
lower. Black poverty rates are higher, by wide margins.
Black unemployment rates are typically double white
rates. All of these indicators show differences between
blacks and whites even after variables that might
influence them are held constant. For example, on
average, black workers with the same education, the
same experience, working in the same industry, and
living in the same region of the country as whites
still earn less money.

These racial inequalities can be simply explained. A
common argument made by whites is that, since more than
150 years have passed since the end of slavery, there
has been more than enough time for blacks to catch up
with whites economically. However, recent economic
research shows the flaw in such arguments. Economists
have shown that economic advantages carry over from
generation to generation and disadvantages do the same.
As economist Austan Goolsbee put it, "The recent
evidence shows quite clearly that in today's economy
starting at the bottom is a recipe for being underpaid
for a long time to come" (New York Times, May 25,
2006). Across generations, we find:

Although Americans still think of their land as a place
of exceptional opportunity--in contrast to class-bound
Europe--the evidence suggests otherwise. And scholars
have, over the past decade, come to see America as a
less mobile society than they once believed. As
recently as the later 1980s, economists argued that not
much advantage passed from parent to child, perhaps as
little as 20 percent. By that measure, a rich man's
grandchild would have barely any edge over a poor man's
grandchild....But over the last 10 years, better data
and more number crunching have led economists and
sociologists to a new consensus: The escalators of
mobility move much more slowly. A substantial body of
research finds that at least 45 percent of parents'
advantage in income is passed along to their children,
and perhaps as much as 60 percent. With the higher
estimate, it's not only how much money your parents
have that matters--even your great-great-grandfather's
wealth might give you a noticeable edge today. (Wall
Street Journal, May 13, 2005)

Imagine my own great-great-grandfather and suppose he
had been a black slave in Mississippi. He would have
been denied education, had his family destroyed, been
worked nearly to death, suffered severe privation
during the Civil War, and been considered less than
human. Then in 1865 he would have been "freed," to fend
for himself and whatever family he had. No job, no
land, no schools, no nothing. For twelve short years,
he might have had some protection provided by the
federal government against the murderous rage of white
Southerners. But in 1877 even that ended, and afterward
he would have been confronted with the full force of
Jim Crow and the Ku Klux Klan. What chance would his
children have had? How likely would they have been to
catch up with their white overlords? Isn't zero the
most likely probability? His grandchildren might have
migrated north, but again with no wealth and not much
schooling. His great-grandchildren would have lived
through the Great Depression. How much property would
they have been likely to accumulate? Finally, through
the heroic struggle of my ancestors and my own
generation, I would have seen the victories of the
civil rights movement, the desegregation of the
schools, the end of lynchings, and the opening up of a
few decent jobs. I might have been an auto worker in
Detroit for a dozen years, but then in the 1970s
everything would have come crashing down again.

Too many whites, and a few blacks, cannot confront such
facts and analysis. They'd rather comfort themselves
with the notion that what lies behind these data is
social pathology. When a local black minister wrote
that black people in New Orleans were themselves
responsible for the misery inflicted by Hurricane
Katrina, Denver's talk show hosts had a field day. They
said that he was heroic for having the courage to say
such a thing, and they hoped for the day when a white
politician like President Bush could say the same.

Everything in our modern world is designed to entice us as individuals, as egos in motion, into believing that we too can achieve the life lived as a king or queen. All of the luxuries are available if we too just sell out our world along with ourselves and comply with these demands. I believe most of us humans do not even recognize what it is we are craving for or selling off. Our ancient past has created a turmoil of the soul and this turmoil has lead us into a place where each of us seeks to dominate and rule everything around us. Awareness is the first step in a direction away from this way of being and reacting.

Recognizing these blocks within us as well as remembering our true history within is the way back to the love that we have lost. What has happened here on Earth is a teaching of great value for one knows not unity if one knows not separation. This goes for love as well. Family is community, it is the oneness that we all share, nothing more or less. As sinister as these alien beings can seem, could it not be that perhaps they are here to teach us to love unconditionally? Perhaps little family units are our own way as human beings of beginning this process for they teach us to love each other, which even in such a small frame can still be quite trying for some to achieve. To remain idle and unwilling to change our perception of family and individuals is to finalize this ancient plan of these alien beings. Family is what fuels everything, the economy, education, politics, the arts and patriotic identity. Family is all of these things and it is relative to how we distribute our love, focus and attention in this world. When we perceive ourselves to be as one big happy human family, we are strong and spiritually powerful, we are in tune with our divine cosmic rights, our cosmic unconditional love. The choice is ours as humans and as individuals and we alone are responsible for the choices that we make. As humans, it is also our duty to ourselves and to each other to realise that when we are separate we are vulnerable, out of tune with each other and most of all we are lacking in love. True power is found in unconditional love. Unconditional love is the energy that creates true family - be aware of this. Love creates unity when it is unconditional; this kind of love creates and makes room for true freedom, harmony and peace.

A distorted sense of family makes room for a distorted sense of responsibility. We draw lines as individuals, as humans that separate ourselves from each other and from our world and our existence; this shifts the focus of responsibility from the eye of love to the eye of the ego. In our modern world, we have quite a few people claiming to be responsible citizens, yet what is it that they do that makes them so responsible and do they understand in what ways they are responsible? When you walk from your bed to your table, to your car from your house, to your job at your desk, and back home again... What exactly are you being responsible for? Do you know what actions you attach yourself to when you function in this way? When you walk down the street and pass by a broken soul and look the other way with no remorse or empathy do you know what you are creating, what you are responsible for? When you judge your own family and treat it with no love, do you know what you are responsible for? When money decides your decisions for you, do you know what you are responsible for? I am not judging in anyway what any of us humans have chosen to do. I am merely creating a focus that perhaps may allow humanity to observe something that perhaps remains a little void in the human consciousness today, frequencies that we operate within as individuals and as humans. One must be responsible for one’s actions in this universe of free will for this is the main foundation of a true and just life and existence.

True justice is that of an enlightened soul, it is the power of the warrior and guardian within baring service to unconditional love and life itself. In our human world the term justice is twisted with the power of human authority, we allow our own human ego to shape it’s meaning and this creates a path of true negativity to unfold within ourselves as individuals and in our outer existence as well. We have huge armies out to kill anything that we do not agree with and we have police on the streets armed and ready to assault anyone who steps out of line with our imposed human authority and way of being, an authority and way of being that sees no value in anything other than it’s own agenda. This is why nuclear bombs exist, this is why the Earth is suffering, this is why we have slavery and major pollution problems, this is why our food and water chains are becoming more and more toxic, this is why the politicians serve the corporate agenda and this is why so many of us are jailed un-necessarily. It seems we humans have chosen to live in a false light and in an unjust way.

The human form of justice must be changed, our form of accepted justice serves no one accept the ultra-elite of this world. For example we have homeless people everywhere dieing on the streets with no where to call home, then along comes the wealthy elite who have more money to burn than there is time in the day and guess what they do? They buy and own two, three, four maybe five houses, not just one. It would be fine if these houses were being used all the time but most of them lay dormant and unused and what does this create? It takes all kinds of energy from the Earth to make these things that no one uses. As a person who has done carpentry, I can tell you that it saddens me to walk into a lumber yard and see rare wood from all around the world selling at high prices only the rich can afford. The elite of our human world take and use things out of a desire to be current and in fashion with the times, filling their unused homes with lavish and expensive materials while leaving nature and the Earth in the gutter with the rest of us, only to change and renovate with each new passing fad that these fashions bring. This is pure greed and quite unconscious behaviour that lacks in a true and honest unconditional love for all of life.

Those who can afford - the elite, the powerful, the wealthy, these elitists take out of an emptiness that somehow exists inside of themselves, leaving devastation in the name of social prominence and wealth. This is not just, in fact, it is an abomination to cosmic law and divine unconditional love. We also jail each other for theft yet our whole social structure is based on theft. Stolen land from ancient tribes, stolen wealth from ancient cultures, stolen lives from ancient mothers and fathers, destroyed and stolen homes from nature’s own, stolen essential elements from the Kingdom of Earth, this is what formed and is still forming our current world, our current societies. Where is true justice in this picture, where is our responsibility? With behaviour like this, where do we fit in as humans, as individuals?

The energy of true justice expands beyond our own realms as humans, true justice serves all of life and this means all of the kingdoms. For example, why is it a just act to hunt six percent of the grizzly bear populations per year for pure fun and sport and hang their heads and furs on walls? Meanwhile, if the grizzly bears hunted six percent of our population per year, it would be a monstrosity that our society would not accept. This is just one example of a twisted form of justice that we humans have created for ourselves to justify our own selfish needs and ways. How many other species do we hunt just for the fun of it and at what percentage per year of these species do we justify taking from existence to satisfy our own selfish desires? Do we even care? Karma is real and this body of life that we are at one with is quite large and quite capable of turning the karmic tables upon us. There are other beings who would love to use us humans in a similar way, for sport, to hunt and kill for the fun of it. Some of these beings are quite powerful beyond our own means as humans. These beings depend on our own actions of karmic invitation and resolve to enter into our universe and do so. When we act with an imbalance of justice, we open these doors to these types of possibilities.

Life is a dance and it is a karmic invitation to direct experience, every action that we produce as individuals is in fact a karmic invitation to this dance. One can resist the truth but one cannot avoid a karmic invitation for it is the one who creates it and brings it into being. Our human consciousness must come to terms with this truth and we must come to create positive karmic invites if we are to continue existing in this form, in this place and with this love. We can often be fooled by our own sentiments towards ourselves, our own cultures, our own religions and our own political views as individuals. As humans we are quite capable of putting ourselves and our own personal beliefs in a flattering light, we create elaborate costumes along with elaborate roles, all to signify our own connections to a great power, divinity and acceptance. If we do not stop and take a good close look at our own ways of being we shall find ourselves separated from our soul and each other in ways that are not desirable to any soul of any individual seeking true unity, unconditional love, harmony, peace and freedom.

It is time to change before we fall prey to our own game as individuals, as humans and as the soul of unconditional love incarnate. This is the only way to a true united kingdom of unconditional love and oneness, the true essence of the Kingdom of the Individual itself. True justice, responsibility and family serves all of the kingdoms, our laws must change and harmonize themselves with this truth as must our ways. Even if a traditional law or way of being is ancient, if it serves the ego instead of unconditional love let it go, for the harm these laws and ways of being create is not worth the time it takes to set these laws and ways of being in stone, nor is it worth the energy we spend doing so.

Return to the Hoop - Root Festival in Arco, Idaho
Date & Time: Saturday, June 9, 2007 - Thursday, June 26, 2008
12:00 PM

Picture this …

A way of walking symbiotically on the mother, where each action that provides your nourishment gives life back to her. When you dig the roots that feed you, you give the seeds a place to take root. When you pick & eat the berries she gives you, you poop them out and allow more to grow. When you gather the pine nuts, you plant them back at the same time, ensure there will be more. When you hunt meat, you use each part the animal provides. We call this reach-around. We call this giving-back. We call this Walking in beauty.

We are offering this lifeway; Returning to the hoop. Many prophecies speak of a returning to a way of life symbiotic to the mother – becoming Human again; here is the opportunity to be that Human Being.

There are a series of Camps as the Seasons Change. The first is Root Festival, in Arco Idaho, occurring during the weeks of the Summer Solstice. At this time, we’ll be gathering roots & seeds, and celebrating this Return to Harmony.

Soon after is Berry Camp, wherever the berries are on. This is usually from early July to late August.

In the fall, September to October, is Pinion Camp. During this camp, we’ll be collection Pinion nuts, and also planting our gatherings from Root Camp & Berry Camp.

During the Winter is WinterCamp, which will be in Nevada this year. Brain-Tanning Hides, making cakes from the foods we gather, and story and song sharing are the focuses of this camp.

The Returning is available for those who choose it. Each of us is invited to walk in harmony with the earth once again.

Blessed be,
Coyote Camp

I would like to ask anyone wanting to help in a focused intention blessing tomorrow to join me. I ask that you send healing energy and the realization that one can choose kindness anywhere there is war. In meditating on this I am hoping that we can offer another perspective to those who are in the throws of war. Please tell anyone who may be interested in being a part of this. I will begin the blessing at noon Wednesday and go until it feels right to close the space.
This will be the first time distance blessing from my home here in Knights Landing, California and I hope you join me from where ever you are, be it work, or school, I just ask that you send out a healing blessing recognizing the ability to choose kindness at around noon tomorrow and join me in changing the world.
A critical mass of like minded folks is one of the most powerful forces on the planet, please join me....
Blessings to you and yours,
Wish

Gay Club in SF with Lots of Longhaired Guys

It's called My Place and it's on Folsom between 8th and 9th Street. Lots of longhaired metal boys there. I'm told the lead singer of Death Angel tends bar there from time to time. Now, that may not seem very hippie, but heck, it's a start. I find the staff and owner very much into radical expression. I'm not normally a bar person, but it's become a favorite place to go.

Too Elevated

Seems like whenever I meet a True Queer Hippy--not just some dicksuckah with a longhair or barefoor fetish--but a wispy elf with that look in the eyes that dances with the infinite universe and all human experience... on the rare occasions when I bump into The Reincarnated Hybiscus, he's like celebate, or not into me; too elevated to have sex.

"oh, you castro clones just want to knock boots" This seems to be the sentiment coming through when I meet an 'angel'. Or more to-the-point: "I've touched all existance and the physical realm is no longer a part of my cosmology" And then he continues to flit about, teasing the fuck out of me.

I've learned to quickly spot 'angels', and now I can usually catch myself before I try to seduce them. They are just symbols. Do not try to touch. There will still be real faggot hotties for getting down with, but the angels are just ethereal icons to fuel the forge of the imagination.

Seeking input/feedback on creative, confrontational nonviolent methods

I would like to move your attention to a site where i, as "span", posted this ideah:

"Volleys of spermjuice and pepsi, and then comedians pop-up"
http://www.anti-politics.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=369&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Since i posted that, i've come up with some up-dates and here's what i have from my notes:

in the context of a vision of villages becoming which see the value of being radically beautiful with each other:

A) "Anything goes" as participatory movies, shown widely; as game shows; and intellectually allowing "anything" via participatory encouragement by mainline media. Context: protection by enrichment strategies.

B) re: "Spanarchist** consciousness (and others realizing such value) would socialize people to realize the value of *getting to the HEART* of how and why people are smashed by other people."
--
By "socialize" i mean to say in the context where war-mind socialization structures are already blocked (via demystification of their metas, for one); where free people (and those in such process) are encouraged (via means of protection by enrichment) to explore beyond the "known" (or "discover" nuances within such).

During which, engaged spanarchists (and those leaning towards such) would be intervening wherever they recognized (intuitively or whatever) budding alienation. (Note: They/we have no formal "power" --i.e. ability to forcefully coerce-- only informal abilities to bridge/connect/inspire)

Sascha challenged:
"do you hold power over others to make sure that the fascists can hold territory [--re: a place of refuge from being wholesale-ly killed and maimed during the consequences of their policies--] and repress people within it?"
--
What truly is "holding power" and can such be held in transitions? If an anarchist picks up a gun (as a last resort) and succeeds in stemming off an attack, but then goes on the offensive and meets a group of fascists who surrender, does she have power over them, and what does she do? It's a hard question. But one seeing the value of spanarchy, as a method, maybe sees an attractive person within the group and doesn't want to see a hysterical mob just kill them all off--and never understand what led to the fascist behavior in the first place.

Sascha:
"Are you going to use violence to proect the fascists [refugee camp]?"
--
No, but i (and others seeing such value) will try to radically intervene on the worst happening as it buds.

on fascism itself, and tendency to hysterify against such a whole group:

By saying "the fascists" we don't say what we truly mean and allow the forever reflection of alienation war and don't solve the pointed challenge: Demonizing whole groups, even individuals, drives them underground in their entrenchments, and only moves them to further entrench. Where they don't do such, and seem to "give up" we see that there's more to the picture than appearances show.

And let's understand exactly what the structure of fascism/tyranny is. Most of it is a chain-of-command structure where the main body has been "fooled and tooled" to carry out the severely alienated interests of forever stupidity (in whatever form). Finally, let's not forget that we may possibly reap what we sow; can we seed situations in which, if the tables are turned, those tooled into aggressing scientifically against us act to escape the compelling techniques of their "superiors"?

On specializations like "referees":
Term meant as an informal way to describe behavior; informal as in a transitory method of individuals organizing (or organized by) no formal/rigid structure.

On "allowing capitalism, the state, fascism and slavery to be 'experimented with':
In community-oriented schools; where those new to the experience of spanarchy gain informed understandings by exercising their intelligence in unprecedented forms (i.e. via the complementary method of "Anything Goes"/"Everything Heralded" media orientations--see top of this article).

America, elsewhere? I will help work if is a commune or what ever,,,I need a break and not much money here until my grants come in (NEA etc) Laid back ...but high energy respected and well liked peaceful soul here...thanks Daniel

somebody posted a video (from old super-8 film) of Hibiscus - founder of THE COCKETTES - performing in San Francisco in 1975 or so. This was after he'd left the San Francisco Angels of Light and was performing in NY with his partner Angel Jack and some of his own family. This show - I think it was called The Adventures of Jane Champagne, was a return to SF, and I think it wasn't received so well by the local angels an ex-cockettes who saw it as too much of a conventional drag revue.

you can find it on youtube at www.youtube.com/watch and there is also a cockettes clip up there as well that I uploaded, a little 45 second promo for my film.

Today there are 388 members of this Tribe, which I think absolutely kicks ass! You all rock! It's not a numbers game, mind you, but I think it's amazing that there are that many folks interested, either self-identified as "queer hippie" or resonate with some aspect of that very loosely classified, ill-defined term. It's at least three to four times the number of e-mail list subscribers I've ever had for my HipFaerie site (www.hipfaerie.net - yes, egregious self-promotion! ;)
Blessings to all y'all,

Gay Marriage: A question of Civil Rights

Statement of Peace and Freedom Party Senate Candidate Marsha Feinland:

In the United States, the institution of marriage controls our right to such matters as child custody, hospital visitation, and retirement income. It is also the most common and socially accepted form of a committed relationship between two adults. To deprive any couple of the right to marry is discrimination. We cannot allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, just as we no longer allow "miscegenation" laws to prohibit interracial marriage.

As the U.S. Senate takes up a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in time for preelection posturing by the right wing, we should study the poses assumed by the two senators from California. Both Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer were opposed to gay marriages in San Francisco when they were briefly legalized. This time, we will probably see them pointing out that the proposed amendment is "unnecessary," "inappropriate," or "not the business of the federal government."

My position is that a constitutional amendment or any law banning gay marriage is unjust, discriminatory and absolutely wrong. As long as the institution exists, everyone has the right to marry.

About to be published: “Barefoot in Asia” – please contribute!

I’ve spent the past few years “on the road”, exploring India, Nepal, Bangladesh and other parts of Asia. It’s my habit to travel barefoot and I’ve met quite a few like-minded souls! I’ve also met people – mostly online – who are THINKING about a barefoot-trip but aren’t sure if it is a good idea. I’m writing frequently about my own experience, health issues, problems like hot roads and the reactions of locals – and I’m trying to answer EVERY question, to reply to EVERY email I receive. But it’s time to try something different: I’ll compile a PDF-brochure “Barefoot in Asia”! I’ll include a collection of my own trip-reports as well as some stuff from the web and some helpful advice… BUT: What’s the use to read about ONE guys adventures on bare soles? That’s why I need your help, folks! Please: DON’T reply if you think travelling barefoot is weird, dangerous, offensive or just uncomfortable. DON’T reply if you think “That dirty hippie”! There are other corners in cyberspace where you can express your opinion. ONLY reply if you’ve done some serious travelling in India, Nepal, Bangladesh or other parts of Asia and if you’ve done it BAREFOOT – at least for some time! You can send me a mail or, even better, you can visit my Yahoo-group, the “Barefoot Traveller’s Tepee” and post your trip-report. You can attach photos (or post them in “Photos – Barefoot in Asia”), you can mention links… Most important is: Write about YOUR OWN experience! How did you bear with hot tarmac, dirty streets, joking kids… Was there any “health issue”? Did you feel comfortable all the time? – These are exactly the questions I’m hearing from interested “newbies”, and I think it’ll be extremely helpful – and inspiring! – for them to go through a collection of first-hand reports, garnished with photos and links! Again: If you wouldn’t even think about travelling barefoot, especially in ASIA – please don’t mind! Travelling barefoot is just ONE out of a million things we can enjoy in life, and nobody says it must be everyone’s “cup of tea”! Also: It’s not the only thing I do, but a habit I share with others!

New tribe for gay / lesbian phans of the jamband community

Brian and Robert (name of tribe)

Spread the word:
(copied from the website brianrobert.com) This site is a gathering place for gay and lesbian phans in the Phish(jamband) community. The inspiration for the name comes from newsgroup discussions during Summer Tour '98 about whether or not the song Brian and Robert was about two gay guys. We don't think it is – we hear it's about Brian Eno and Robert Fripp – but that was the first time we'd ever heard any gay-related conversation in the community at-large. Since then, we've met a few other folks like ourselves. Each of them has made basically the same point: "I know I'm not the only one, but sometimes at shows I feel that way." That's what BrianRobert.com is all about -- recognizing that we're not alone and that there's no reason to ever feel a disconnect from the community as a whole. Maybe we'll even make some kind friends along the way...

GAY GEEKS
The GBLT Haven for Intellectuals and Visionaries!

Okay, you’re looking for other folks who can understand why you collect old road maps, talk endlessly about math theory, play the bassoon, and search the countryside for the perfect Bosch pear. Your friends would rather go to beer busts, sex parties, and dance to techno. They just don’t understand you or your passions.

We do. Introducing Gay Geeks. You've arrived!

Our first gathering will be Saturday July 1, 2006 at 2:00pm at Muddy's Coffeehouse, 1304 Valencia Street in San Francisco, near the corner of 24th and Valencia. It's 1 block from BART's 24th Street station, accessible by Muni, and parking is decent within a block or two.

It's a discussion group and it can become so much more. Hope to see you there!

Send a blank e-mail anytime for the latest info to: gaygeeks@yahoo.com

Event: This is an experimental workshop in sensual touch and communication for people with entheogenic "liquid minds." We start with inner work, using music, meditation and aromatherapy to open senses and mind. Then we work in dyads, exploring eye contact, intuition, and safe touch. Then, grouped by gender (men, women, & mixed) we will work in groups, exploring touch, fantasy, intimacy, and pleasure. In a safe setting with boundaries carefully maintained, and with the aid of plant medicines and meditation, we will explore a new level of sensual play and intimacy. Arrive liquid and on time. 18+.

Do U have to have long hair to be a hippie...

I have always been called a "hippie" even when I joined the army and did BCT in Kentucky, I was called a fag from cali. or hippie. And then when I worked as a federal agent I was known as a hippy cop. But I never had long hair, even the street thugs and mexican gangsters in Ariz. called me a hippie from cali.
They even told me if I didin't stop smokin so much pot I would turn into a rasta man. Well the people on the street in Venice beach and Redondo beach call me an old hippy from the 60s. I really liked being called a pink party monster, in west hollyweed. My very first exposure to "hippy" life was at the monterray pop festival in 69 with Jimmy and Janice. Then hangin out with the freaks in Laguna Beach. Or partying with stephen stills and david caradine in Laural canyon, lots of hippies. When I lived in Hawaii, I always was at the beach with hippy's from Mich. and Ohio and of coarse Cali. So if long hair is a requirement then I guess I don't qualify.
